Beware The Credit Repair Fraud

by Mike on May 14, 2009

As the recession deepens and the credit crunch continues, it is not surprising that people who always managed to borrow large sums of money throughout the years of plenty are now finding it more difficult to stay on top of their financial affairs. Many people nowadays are starting to experience problems in making their regular debt repayments. Worse still, with rising unemployment this situation may just get worse before it begins to improve.

Perhaps it is not surprising then that with people defaulting on their debts more and more often there is a rapidly rising demand for credit repair programs. Credit repair is a valuable service and there are many reliable and trustworthy companies, but in the current economy there are also a few fraudulent companies out there right now also.

There are some startling claims, made on the web, or by email of companies or individuals who claim to be able to repair your credit quickly and painlessly. How can you tell if a claim is fraudulent or legitimate? There are usually several informative signals that you should be aware of.

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. If the offer of help seems to be able to solve all your problems in one easy step, without any effort on your behalf, then the claim is almost certainly false. Credit reports cannot be cleaned overnight. Credit repair is often a lengthy process.

Have a look at the tone of the advertisement. Is it spam-like? If it is an email where is it coming from? Does it look like it is an email address that a bona-fide company would use? Does the website provide a proper contact page, with a telephone number?

There is some good news if you do indeed find yourself in need of credit repair. You can actually undertake much of the process yourself. It is time consuming but it will not cost you money to do it yourself. You can submit disputes on your own and with some diligence, patience and discipline you may be able to make some real progress in improving your overall credit position.
