Car Repossession And Credit

by Mike on July 2, 2009

The current economic crisis has brought about a shocking offer from many of the car manufacturers. For the first time ever, car manufacturers are offering to help you pay your payments for up to 9 months if you lose your job. They are offering this in response to the current economy in an attempt to convince consumers to start buying new cars again. Perhaps this will help with the current economic recession.

In the past, if you lost your job and you were not able to pay your payments you were out of luck and your car would be repossessed. Many people have gone through the unfortunate experience of having a car repossessed.

One of the most difficult things that follows a repossession is the fact that the negative credit can stay on your credit report for as long as 7 years and it can prevent you from getting financing on everything from another car loan to a home mortgage.

As long as this negative rating stays on your report it will affect your overall credit score and prevent you from getting additional credit, however, it is possible to get a repossession deleted from your report and it happens all the time. Through credit bureau disputes and creditor negotiations, you may be able to delete the repossession entirely or at the very least, improve the status of the repossession.

You can do all of the work to repair your credit and get repossessions removed on your own or you can hire a professional credit repair company. Either way you will probably need to contact the original creditor and negotiate with them to determine if they may be willing to remove the account or report it as “paid in full” upon payment or partial payment of any money due.

If the repossession is showing on your account but it is false you will only need to dispute directly with the credit bureaus. After they receive your dispute it is up to them to verify the accuracy with the creditor.

You need not wait to try to repair your credit because negative credit is removed from reports all the time. This includes negative items such as repossessions, collection accounts, even bankruptcies and tax liens. Few people make through their whole lives without having a few difficulties and that includes financial challenges. It is just a part of life. If you can clean up your credit you can start all over again and life will be easier.

Getting your credit repaired can help you start over with a fresh financial future. You may be able to get another car loan, a home mortgage and other credit. It is crucial though that you keep your credit good and avoid any repossessions or credit defaults in the future. If you are not completely sure that you can make the payments do not opt for the credit, wait until you can pay cash.

Hopefully for all of us the economy will improve very soon and the car manufacturers will suspend any offers to help with your payments. That offer is just a short-term fix and not something that is plausible to stick around in the future. You can help yourself by repairing your past credit and keeping it good in the future by living within your means.

You can get negative marks including repossessions removed from your credit reports with some expertise and some time. Just do your best to repair the credit you have and avoid any future credit issues.
