Free Credit Reports | Can I Trust Them?

by Mike on May 11, 2009

Are you considering credit repair because you are concerned about your credit status? What is the first step? Getting a copy of your personal credit report is the first thing that you should do.

You are entitled to a free report from each of the big three credit bureaus, TransUnion, Equifax and Experian, each year. You do not need to go through one of the advertisements on the Internet, TV or the radio to get these, and in fact those offers will likely end up costing you money. You can contact the credit bureaus directly.

Oftentimes the advertisements for a free credit report are from companies that want to set you up for a credit report subscription account. You will get your free credit report but this is just a teaser. They will also try to sign you up for a trial period of the credit report subscription.

If you need additional reports throughout the year, beyond the one free report that you are entitled to, you can get an up-to-date copy for a small fee by contacting the credit bureaus directly.

The credit report subscription accounts that the “free credit report” companies are offering can actually turn out to be quite pricey and even unnecessary, especially as they continue to charge your credit card every month.

The best place to get your credit report is at the Federal Trade Commission’s information page.
