Have you been turned down for a job because of your credit?

Few individuals recognize that having a high credit score can be helpful when searching for a job. While it is clear that a high credit score will affect getting a loan, the fact is that by law an employer can refuse to employ an interviewee based only on their credit report.

Some employers may consider that your credit history is a evenhanded appraisal of your sense of conscientiousness, your prudence and your work performance. They consider your credit history to be valid representation of you and the type of worker you may turn out to be.

But, on the other side of the coin, there are consumer advocates that reason that the practice of using credit reports in hiring is an unjust means of bias against potential employees. They justifiably point out that demanding times and circumstances can happen to anyone and many times bad credit is beyond our control.

However, regardless of which side of the quarrel you stand, the fact is that the information contained on your credit report can play a huge role in your eventual job quest. One consideration though is that a would-be employer must have your definite go-ahead to run a credit report. Be sure you study the fine print on every application that you sign.

If your credit report is decent then of course, there is no dilemma in letting a prospective employer see your credit report. However, in the existing economy, many people have had credit problems that have never had damaging credit in the past. If you do have some destructive credit, you need to know what you can do to curtail the impact of your credit on your life and your job quest.

If you do not know what is showing on your credit report you need to get your free yearly report from each of the three main credit reporting agencies, TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. Go through each report line by line and look for any discrepancies, any items that are inaccurate or incomplete or anything that you may be able to call into question.

You may then contest the doubtful items and possibly get them deleted. Depending on the situation you may want to ponder the assist of a qualified credit repair service or you can also do the work on your own. Your objective should be to boost your credit score and make your report look as good as possible.

Credit repair does take time, so you may not be able to accomplish the process before the big job interview. If you begin right away and keep your credit as good as possible, having an employer run your credit report may not be a quandary when the time comes.

However, if it does become an concern and you have some acceptable but unanticipated circumstances that caused your low credit scores, you may need to just defend the details to your potential new employer and hope that they are considerate and can excuse your problems from the past.
