What You Can Do On Credit Report Charge-offs

by Mike on June 10, 2009

Creditors often see charge-offs as an warning that a consumer has been negligent about their credit in the past and that they are a above what is usual risk for credit in the future. According to Bankrate.com the number one basis for getting turned down on a loan is because of charge-offs.

However, in this existing economy there are people who are facing monetary challenges that they have never experienced before. Anyone who has had these tribulations needs to be conscious of what they can do about charge-off on their credit reports.

Typically when a payment has not been made on an account for 180 days the debt will be charged off. However, this does not relieve the consumer of the accountability to pay the debt and collection attempts may go on.

It is feasible for a charge-off to end up on even the most credit-worthy person’s reports. A bill could have been unconsciously ignored. You could have moved and forgot about telling the creditor so their bills were unable to reach you. You could have even thought that someone else was paying it, for case in point in the case of divorce when the courts gave it to your ex-spouse.

Regularly the first notification of a problematical charge-off showing on your credit report is when you are denied credit because of it. Negative credit information can show up on anybody’s credit report. No one is invulnerable.

It is also a problem on what you should do about a charge-off if it is on your report. If you pay it off it will show new activity on the account and the 7-year period that it must stay on your report can initiate over again completely anew. That means that the negative credit may stay on your report even longer than 7 years if you pay off an old charge-off. You must try to get it removed absolutely or at the very least it must show as a “paid” charge-off.

In spite of this, you can take steps to get the charge-off and other negative credits removed from your record. With credit bureau disputes or creditor negotiations you may be able to increase the status of the charge-off or even get it completely removed from your credit reports. You will almost certainly have to transact business directly with your creditors and you can do this on your own or think about the services of a skilled credit repair service to assist you.

In many cases it is possible to get negative credit removed before the typical 7-year waiting period. You just need to take the action and get the results.
